Help4 Logs

Challenge

The challenge was first to consolidate all of the logs in each of the CBT programs, and then to generalize the logs so that a single interaction design could be standardized for both programs, as well as for symptom management for patients with chronic health conditions.

Help4 Tobacco Cessation started with three separate logs — a log to assess what the baseline tobacco use was, a log leading up to and during the quitting process, and a log for maintenance where users could track what triggered a craving, how many cravings they had, and when a craving occured.

Help4 Insomnia started with three logs — a worry log where users would journal their worries and what gave them anxiety, a baseline log to establish baseline sleep patterns, and an ongoing sleep log where users would log their sleep patterns throughout the therapy. Additionally there was a section of the app dedicated to what is called ‘Sleep Restriction Therapy’ (SRT) where users could follow a suggested sleep schedule designed to force the body into a more healthy sleep pattern.

Solution

Initially the three logs of Help4 Tobacco Cessation were combined into a single log where users could log a baseline tobacco habit, track cravings and what would trigger them, and log ongoing tobacco use throughout the therapy — from before they quit, throughout the quitting process, and tracking their behaviors after they quit.

The three logs in the Help4 Insomnia application got similarly combined into a single logging interaction where users could track their sleep patterns and journal their worries.

Finally, I standardized the interaction design across the programs — building a single unified logging interaction that could be adapted for either CBT program, as well as for applications such as a symptom tracker for lymphedema patients that Zansors had previously developed.

Early Log — Help4 Insomnia

The first iteration of the app had about 52 screens - roughly on par with the paper program. Below are the first 14 screens.

Early Log — Help4 Tobacco

The earliest iteration of the log interaction replicated the three logs in the Tobacco Tactics CBT program: there was a distinct log to capture baseline tobacco usage, a log to capture tobacco use and cravings while quitting, and an ongoing log to capture slip ups.

Middle Log — Help4 Tobacco Cessation

in this iteration the baseline, quitting, and slip-up logs were consolidated into one single logging and analysis interaction. This unified log would be improved on in later versions.

Middle Log — Help4 Insomnia

The three logs (Baseline, Quitting, and Slip Up Log) were consolidated into one single logging and analysis interaction. This unified log would be improved on in later versions.

Late Log — Help4 Tobacco Cessation

The third iteration of wireframes iterated on the log - streamlining and simplifying the interaction for the user. The log was divided into three distinct interactions: The Enter Data screen is where user data was captured and recorded. The Data Tracker is a trend level view where data analysis was displayed for users to view larger behavioral trends at a glance. The Daily View is where users could view and update or edit single entries based on what time and day they were recorded.

Late Log — Help4 Insomnia

The new log was tweaked to use for recording sleep patterns.

Final Log — Help4 Tobacco Cessation

There was one last iteration on the log interaction before they got a visual treatment. The Daily View was added to give a granular overview of a single day of recorded logs, and a portrait view was added to give a more detailed perspective of ongoing trends and analytics.

Final Logs — Help4 Insomnia

Here is how the log interaction was adapted for the Insomnia Application. No daily overview was needed as sleep was logged once a day.
